In an impressive and kind feat of medical expertise, physicians at MGM Healthcare Chennai are in news everywhere by successfully performing a heart transplant on a teenage patient from Karachi, Pakistan, as reported by the ANI news agency.

Ayesha, Pakistani Teen Gets Free Transplant

Ayesha Rashid, a 19-year-old from Karachi, Pakistan, embarked on a challenging medical situation in 2019 following a sudden cardiac arrest triggered by an underlying heart condition. After initial treatment efforts in her hometown, her health complications persisted, prompting her to seek further evaluation in Chennai. However, it wasn’t until June 2023 that Ayesha returned to Chennai for the critical heart transplant procedure.

Dr. KR Balakrishnan, a distinguished figure in the field of heart transplants at MGM Healthcare, emerged as a beacon of hope for Ayesha and her family. Not only did he identify Ayesha’s complex medical issues, but he also extended support to alleviate her financial burdens. Collaborating with Aishwaryam, a Chennai-based healthcare trust, Dr. Balakrishnan ensured that Ayesha received the necessary financial assistance for her treatment.

On January 31, 2024, a heart was transported via air from Delhi to Chennai to be implanted in Ayesha’s chest.

Challenges of the Case

Reflecting on Ayesha’s ordeal and the financial challenges she faced, Dr. Balakrishnan shared insights into the difficulties encountered by patients in countries like Pakistan, where access to advanced medical equipment is limited. He underscored the pivotal role played by the Aishwaryam trust in facilitating Ayesha’s treatment, emphasizing the importance of collaborative efforts in healthcare.

Dr. Suresh Rao, co-director at the Institute of Heart and Lung Transplant and Mechanical Circulatory Support, praised the whole medical team, noting that MGM Healthcare stands as one of the leading centers for heart transplants worldwide, performing nearly 100 procedures annually.

Expressing her gratitude, Ayesha conveyed her thanks to the Indian government and her dedicated medical team, expressing her heartfelt desire to return to India in the future.

Ayesha’s mother, Sanober, shared the emotional journey of their family, narrating the challenges they faced and the unwavering support extended by Dr. Balakrishnan and the medical team in Chennai. She expressed her joy at her daughter’s successful transplant in India, highlighting the transformative impact of the procedure on Ayesha’s life.
